A good front porch is an almost sacred space for Southerners. It’s where an unexpected visit from a new friend turns into an hours-long conversation fueled by condensation-covered glasses of lemonade and whatever sweet treat we just took out of the oven. It’s where a rocking chair and a vibrant sunset or a riveting novel bring a few moments of quiet and stillness into our busy day. In the dead of summer, it’s where we catch an unexpected, much-appreciated breeze or welcome the sorely needed rainstorm that’s just passing through.
